I Have Extremely Dry Skin.  Is There Anything That Can Help?

As we age, the skin’s barrier degrades. The loss of barrier function results in dry, brittle, skin and increased susceptibility to infection and irritation. Abnormal barrier function also plays an important role in aging skin and various skin disorders. While many traditional moisturizers merely mask, temporarily reduce dryness or even exacerbate dryness and irritation.      

The skin’s outermost layers, collectively known as the stratum corneum, serve as a protective barrier against excessive water loss and environmental aggressors. Healthy, attractive skin is directly related to optimal barrier function in the stratum corneum. Environmental toxins, exposure to UV radiation, changes in humidity, common moisturizers and topical treatments, psychological stress and the skin’s natural aging process all contribute to disruptions of the barrier that can lead to dryness, irritation and acceleration of fine lines and wrinkles.

The stratum corneum is composed of bilayer sheets of three dominant epidermal lipids including cholesterol, free fatty acids and ceramides, all necessary for repairing and maintaining a healthy barrier. Published scientific research by dermatologists at the University of California has shown that a specific molecular ratio of all three lipids applied topically repairs disruptions of the barrier and enhances its recovery rate. Using moisturizers containing only one or two of these lipids may help increase water content of the skin, but they do nothing to repair barrier function and may actually impede, rather than facilitate, barrier repair. High water content indicates a high degree of moisturization but is not necessarily an indication of good barrier function.
