Ask Francine

I always love hearing from our fans, understanding their concerns/questions and providing straight forward information to help navigate and better understand the often confusing world of skin care and beauty products. We received some great questions from our ‘Ask Francine” series and narrowed it down to the final 4 below. It’s a quick and easy read, so take your time and enjoy!!

1. How often do I need to wash my makeup brushes? – Try to wash your makeup brushes at least once a month. Keeping brushes and makeup applicators reasonably clean helps prevent bacteria build up (helps prevent break outs!) to keep your skin looking fresh and healthy. Also, excess product can accumulate on the brushes causing color to grab and smudge. Clean brushes prevent “color grab” and allow a smooth, even application. You can use special brush cleansers or try my favorite, Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint or Almond Pure Castile Liquid Soap; even Baby Shampoo works nicely. Rinse thoroughly and lay brushes down on a clean towel to dry.

2. What are the best creams to get rid of the bags under my eyes? – Look for products containing high percentages of antioxidants and specific anti-edema peptides. These peptides (like Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5) help visibly reduce edema underneath the eye area to counteract puffiness and dark circles. Antioxidants help fight free radical damage which can also contribute to under eye bags. I travel all the time and constantly fight dark under eye bags! I created our Under Eye Rejuvenator to target all these issues; plus it also contains light reflective pigments so your under eye area looks better instantly. This is one product I am NEVER without! You can also try mixing the eye treatment with concealer (try our Concealer and So Much More) to camouflage the area while it’s working.

3. If I apply sunscreen on my face before my CC cream, will it still be effective? Yes, it should still be effective. But a better/easier option is to use one of the newer sunscreen tints that combine a high level sunscreen (SPF of at least 30 or above) with a sheer facial tint. This 2 in 1 option offers sheer, healthy looking coverage to even skin tone and minimize imperfections, plus the added benefit of daily SPF protection that everyone needs to prevent photo aging from incidental sun exposure. Try our Colour Vérité Real Skin Flawless Facial Tint SPF45 , available in Light, Medium and Deep. These multi-taskers save time and money and work beautifully on all skin types!

4. What is a better moisturizer, a cream based or gel based moisturizer? This is a great question but the answer depends on your particular skin type and needs. If your skin tends toward normal to oily and your main concern is hydration or lack of moisture then a gel based moisturizer will be your best bet. These are also referred to as gel/creams and have a lighter weight texture and cooling feel when applied to the skin. Our Blue Copper 5 Firming Elasticity Repair is a gel/cream formula, light weight and super hydrating; it’s also an excellent anti-ager for normal and normal/oily skin types. If your skin tends to be more on the normal/dry side, you’ll probably prefer a cream based product. Creams can be oil in water (o/w) or water in oil (w/o) emulsions that contain hydrating ingredients, humectants (pulls moisture from the air) AND extra lipids (oils) to reduce surface dryness and lock in moisture. Our Anti-Radical Age Defense Moisture Complex and Cream Extreme Intensive Repair are both cream based products. They feature a proprietary combination of skin identical lipids that fortify the natural moisture barrier, essential for reducing dryness and maintaining smooth, soft, heathy looking skin.
